RTR Blog: Andrew's Away Mission To Griffith Observatory

With the finale of Star Trek Discovery season two under our belts, I was immediately brought back to one of my favourite two-part Star Trek Voyager episodes "Future's End". For those of you that don't remember this one, it involves the U.S.S Voyager being accidentally brought back to Los Angeles in the year 1996 by a 29th century time ship! It's a premise that seems like it may just be a rip off of The Voyage Home, but it is different enough with zany twists and turns and 90s fashion to make a great couple hours of television!
An added bonus of the Leonard Nimoy Theatre

In the episode a young Sarah Silverman working at the Griffith Observatory spots a UFO, which turns out to be the poorly hidden Voyager. Getting to use an actual on scene location in it's actual time period is something that really adds to this episode, and made the Griffith Observatory a must see location when I was in L.A last summer. Twenty two years later, it look exactly the same, and is a very cool location to check out regardless of your Star Trek fandom. As an added bonus, inside they have a theatre named in the memory of Leonard Nimoy, which is basically the cherry on top of an amazing location!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Going back and revisiting Futures End today, with the excitement of Star Trek; Discovery season three being all the buzz on the internet right now
I am reminded that the most beautiful thing about Star Trek is that it works in any time period, on any ship, with any cast so long as the story is really good! I don't know if season three is going to tap into any of the temporal police like we see in this episode or not, but re-watching this give me renewed faith that an insane premise can be pulled off if done right, and I hope that we see more of that in season three, and ideally we get some more on location shooting for me to visit!!
