RTR Blog: Andrew's Away Mission to an Iconian Gateway

Congratulations to the 2019 NBA Champion Toronto Raptors!! In honour of being the first Canadian basketball team to win the NBA title, I thought it only fitting to make a Star Trek connection to Toronto's Nathan Phillip Square, end point of the Raptors victory parade. If you are curious as to how the Toronto city hall relates to Star Trek, you have to go back to The Next Generation season two, eleventh episode "Contagion". It appears very briefly in the Iconian Gateway when a series of images/locations are flashing by; it is seen only briefly, but the two curved buildings are very identifiable.

Oddly enough, the first time Toronto city hall was used in a piece of Star Trek media, was actually from a comic strip, "The Ghost Planet" from 1969, when the Original Enterprise crew beamed down to a ruined city, with one standing structure. That structure was inspired by the recently constructed Toronto city hall! As always, I encourage all of you Star Trek fans out there that the next time you visit Canada's biggest city, check out Nathan Phillip Square and the Toronto city hall; if not for the iconic Toronto sign, or the Star Trek connection, than to see the Raptors 2019 NBA Championship banners!
