RTR Blog: Andrew's Away Mission to Kaminar

A week into 2020, and I find myself already eagerly
anticipating warmer weather, beach days and most of importantly more Star Trek!! As I work on my resolutions and eagerly await Picard to debut in two weeks time, I also am taking the time to organize and back up my photos from 2019! As I was going through my summer pictures and reminiscing about patio beers, warmer weather and midnight swims, I found some pictures of me on Kaminar!
Fans of Star Trek: Short Treks will no doubt recognize this location from the season one Short Trek episode "The Brightest Star" and Discovery fans will recognize it from season two's episode "The Sounds of Thunder". In actual fact, it is a very small beach at Bluffers Park in Scarborough (a burb of Toronto). It utilizes the beautiful Scarborough bluffs and a little bit of digital redening to make this little beach in Ontario feel very alien.
One of the nice things about finding this filming location is that it is very easy to either drive to Bluffers Park or take the TTC (public transit) in the summer time; and once you're there, all of the areas that they used for the two episodes are withing a five or ten walk of the main parking lot. On a hot summer day, I would recommend hiking the bluffs or utilizing the beach (although Lake Ontario is kind of cold) anyway, but the fact that you can walk in Saru's fictional footsteps and see real world Kaminar without risk of the Ba'ul killing you, makes this a must see! It is definitely reccomended to go during the summer time, but the spring and fall are also really beautiful as well. As always I can't recommend filming location scouting enough, whether you're in Los Angeles, New York or yes, even Toronto, there are always great adventures to be had!
