RTR Blog: Andrew's Hopes and Dream for Star Trek Picard

TODAY IS THE DAY!! PICARD IS HERE!!!

Anything Matt can do, I can do better? Well I guess we'll find out!! Tuesday Matt made some bold predictions, as well as stated his hopes and dreams for Star Trek: Picard. Today, I'll do the same today with only hours left before we finally get to feast our eyes on what is genuinely the most exciting piece of Trek content we've had since Random Trek Review 😉. I thought that Matt made some good predictions and I think we can all agree that the deep rooted Next Generation fan in him, made him seem more positive than if he was making some predictions on Discovery season three. That being said, I don't know that i am as confident or as positive as he is, so without further ado, here are MY hopes, dreams and predictions for Star Trek Picard!!

Don't Star Wars it!!

In a world where we have seen literally every major franchise been rebooted, redone, revived, rearranged and re-imagined, it's enough to make you want to regurgitate. Lots of these have been great! James Bond in Casino Royale, Spiderman in the Marvel Universe and the amazing Cobra Kai mini-series based on the Karate Kid all spring to my mind. That being said, there have been so many beloved franchise fall victim to reboot hell, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, the Terminator series, Ghostbuster 2017, hell even the J.J Abrams Trek reboots ran the series into the ground! I think the worst of the worst though has to be very fittingly the Star Wars Sequel soft reboot trilogy. Considering people spent hours of their childhood arguing over whether Star Trek or Star Wars was better, it is the best possible example of what I don't want Picard to be. After being intrigued by Force Awakens, the second and third movies, The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker, literally killed the franchise for me. And based on Rotten Tomatoes and the general pulse of the Star Wars community, it wasn't just me. Most people either hated the last two movies or were so begrudged by Last Jedi that they just plain don't care anymore. This would be, for me anyway, the worst possible way for Picard to go. I don't care about Dahj, or Dr. Juanti, or a samurai vulcan! I want all my old favourites, and I don't care that they are 100 years old. I want cameos upon cameos, and so much Star Trek fan service that I'm sick. When everyone looks back at the Star Wars sequel trilogy from now until eternity, all anyone will say is that "man it was a shame we got no scenes with Luke, Han and Leia all together". I don't want that for Picard, I want to know what every TNG charachter has been up to, where everyone is now and I want to see them drop in on Jean-Luc like it's a Golden Girls rerun!

Go Beyond the Next Generation

It's already been announced that we are going to get Jeri Ryan back for this series, and in my opinion,
why stop there? I'd love to see other Voyager characters, DS9 characters and even maybe call backs and time travel episodes to visit the Enterprise and Original Series crews! I know this kind of fan service is sometimes looked down upon, but the reality is, if you didn't want that stuff, why even bring back Picard in the first place? We already have Discovery to pave a new path, so Picard can be like the reunion tour!

Slow, Steady and Deep!

I don't want or need this show to have very much action, and I definitely don't need to see 80 year old Patrick Stewart running around with a phaser or fist fighting anyone. Jean-Luc Picard was beloved in TNG because of the speeches, moral quandaries, and his diplomacy.  When they went to a more action oriented Picard in the TNG movies, it didn't really work, with the exception of First Contact. I'm ok with some of the new supporting characters getting into some scuffles, but I'd actually prefer to keep it to a minimum! I want the vast majority of the show to be slow, and build towards big ship battles or fights that mean something through slow steady story telling!

The Story

I have tried very hard to avoid spoilers for this series, and don't know very much about what to expect other than what I have cobbled together from the couple of trailers and the Short Trek: Children of Mars. My prediction is that after the events of ST: Nemisis, Starfleet uses the B-4 prototype to research android technology. They do a poor job controlling it (ala Control in ST; Discovery), and that leads to the androids rebelling against humans and attacking Mars as we saw in the Short Trek. Picard will be upset that he allowed them to use B-4 and didn't keep up his beliefs from Measure of a Man and will leave Starfleet. We'll essentially get the same story arc as we saw in ST: Disco season two, but with some 7 of 9 /borg/Romulan connection that will end up being connected to the synths! I actually think that the producers will have learned their lesson from Disco, and will do a much better job of keeping the pieces linked together and the overall feel will have a much better payoff as well! I think that like Star Wars, they won't do a good job of creating or crafting new characters and will rely to heavily on the nostalgia of Hugh, Seven, Riker, etc. I won't be mad about it, but I think the fandom will say they want the show to develop the new characters more, and when they eventually do, they won't come up with anything as good as we've seen in previous Trek. I worry the story will suffer from too much action and fighting, and if we do see Picard doing any fighting, it will verge on Irishman level believabilty!

NEW PICARD - NEW TREK - LETS PARTY

Whether this show is good, bad, great, or crap, who cares? We have new Trek on TV, we have Jean-Luc Picard back, we've got Riker back, Troi back, Seven back!! When I was fourteen years old and the Phantom Menace came out, I loved it!! I loved it for years, until the internet faithful, and Fandom Menace pointed out every little mistake and problem with the film and it kind of ruined it for me! I don't want that for Star Trek, I want to pop the bubbly, and go into this with totally rose coloured glasses, and I'm gonna just enjoy the ride. If there are lens flares, and dumb action and cheesy lines, Im just going to roll with it and be glad that Im watching TNG characters run around in 2020!!!

Check back to this space to see our reactions to Picard, very very soon!!
